Duke researchers have identified that mutations in the isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) gene contribute to the formation of benign tumours in cartilage that can be a precursor to malignancies.  These benign tumours, known as enchondromas, are associated with severe pain, fractures, and skeletal deformities.
